Beard Oil or Beard Balm: Which One Should You Use (and How to Apply It)

Beard care tips · Ippos Beard

Beard oil or beard balm? Oil feeds the skin and the hair, works on every beard and is the fix for short, itchy beards. Balm contains wax: it tames, holds and protects medium and long beards. From about 3 to 4 centimetres (an inch and a half), using both together gives the best result.

You have a beard, you want to look after it, and you are standing in front of two products that seem to do the same thing. Beard oil vs beard balm: which one do you actually need? The answer depends on the length of your beard, your skin and what bothers you day to day. Here is a simple guide to choosing, then applying each one without getting it everywhere.

01The difference in one minute

Beard oil is a blend of liquid plant oils that soaks in fast. Its job is the skin under your beard and the hair fibre itself. It moisturises, softens and calms itching. It gives no hold at all.

Beard balm is a paste. It contains oils too, but mostly a plant butter and wax. It conditions a little, but its real job is styling: it flattens stray hairs, gives shape and shields the beard from wind and cold. It stays on the surface.

Keep this picture in mind: oil works on the inside, balm works on the outside. They are not rivals, they are two different tools.

02Beard oil: who it is for and why

Oil is the first product to buy when you start growing. In the first weeks the skin feels tight, it itches and beard dandruff shows up. Oil solves most of that within days, because it replaces the natural sebum your skin can no longer produce in enough quantity for hair that keeps getting longer.

It also suits stubble and short, well trimmed beards, where a balm would have nothing to tame. And it stays useful on a long beard as a base layer under the balm. If you only keep one product, keep this one.

When choosing, read the ingredients: plant oils such as jojoba, argan, sweet almond or grapeseed, and a light scent. Your beard sits right under your nose all day, so pick a smell you truly like.

03Beard balm: who it is for and why

Balm becomes interesting once hairs start pointing in every direction, usually around 3 to 4 centimetres. It presses down cowlicks, keeps a clean line on the cheeks and stops the beard from puffing up during the day. It also forms a light barrier against cold and dry winter air.

It is made for medium and long beards, for curly or thick beards, and for anyone who likes a sharp, shaped beard at work. On a very short beard it often leaves a greasy film with no real benefit.

You can spot a good balm by its texture: it should melt between your hands in a few seconds and leave no white clumps in the hair. More wax means more hold, but also more weight.

04Choosing by beard length

Stubble to 1 cm

Oil only, 2 to 3 drops. The goal is to calm the skin. Balm is pointless at this stage.

Short beard, 1 to 3 cm

Oil every day. A light balm on days when a few stray hairs annoy you, or when it is very cold outside.

Medium beard, 3 to 6 cm

Both. Oil in the morning after the shower, then a pea of balm to shape. This is the length where the combination really changes how your beard looks.

Long beard, over 6 cm

A slightly more generous dose of oil, balm for hold, and a brush to spread everything down to the tips. Without a brush, product stays on top and the ends stay dry.

05How to apply beard oil

The right moment is after the shower, on a clean, towel dried beard that is still slightly damp. Pores are open and the hair absorbs better. Put 3 to 6 drops in your palm depending on length, rub your hands together, then go in under the beard first, against the grain, to reach the skin. Then smooth down with the grain.

Finish with a brush. This is the step everyone skips and the one that makes the difference: the brush carries the oil from root to tip and removes the excess. Our engraved beard brush (39.99 €) with natural bristles does exactly that job, and its wooden handle can be hand engraved in our workshop in France with a first name or initials. It is the kind of accessory you keep for years, and a gift that always lands well with a bearded man.

If the beard looks shiny or feels sticky, you used too much. Drop one or two drops the next day.

06How to apply beard balm

Scrape out a small amount with your nail, about a pea for a medium beard. Rub it between your palms until it melts completely into a warm oil. If you apply it while still solid, you will get white streaks.

Run your hands through the whole beard, focusing on the areas that go sideways: cheeks, moustache, under the chin. Then shape with a brush or comb. Balm works best on a dry or barely damp beard, never on a soaking wet one.

You do not have to rinse it out at night, but wash your beard two or three times a week with a gentle beard wash so the wax does not build up.

07The routine that works, and the mistakes to avoid

The simplest routine for a beard over 3 centimetres: shower, towel dry, oil, brush, balm, shape. Five minutes, no more. At weekends or on days with nothing planned, skip the balm and let the beard breathe.

First mistake: putting balm on dry skin thinking it moisturises. It does not do enough for that, you need oil underneath. Second mistake: oiling a dirty beard, the product locks in the grime. Third mistake: forgetting the brush. On that note, brushing drops a few dead hairs on the sink every day: a Beard Sponge (9.99 €) picks them up in one pass, with no endless rinsing.

And if you are looking for an idea for a bearded man in your life, a bottle of oil paired with an engraved accessory makes a complete gift. We gathered several in our article on Christmas gifts for bearded men, and our guide to personalized beard accessories explains what to have engraved.

How to choose

Start from your beard length. Under 3 centimetres: an oil is enough, choose it for its ingredients and its scent. Over 3 centimetres: oil in the morning for the skin, balm afterwards for shape. Either way, add a natural bristle brush, it is what spreads the product and makes the beard soft. At Ippos Beard we do not make oil or balm, but we hand engrave in France the accessories that go with them: brush, razors, toiletry bag. Discover our personalized beard accessories.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use beard oil and beard balm on the same day?

Yes, and it is even recommended from 3 or 4 centimetres. Apply the oil first on a clean, slightly damp beard, brush, then add the balm for shape.

Should you apply beard oil every day?

Once a day is enough, in the morning after the shower. If your skin is very dry or in winter, a second small dose in the evening can help.

Does beard balm replace beard oil?

No. Balm conditions a little but stays on the surface. To calm itchy skin you need oil. Balm is mainly for styling and protection.

How much beard oil should I use?

2 to 3 drops for a short beard, 4 to 6 for a medium beard, a little more for a long one. If the beard looks shiny or feels sticky, use less.

Why brush after applying oil?

The brush spreads the oil from root to tip, removes the excess and detangles. Without it, the product stays on top and the ends stay dry.
