How to Grow a Beard Faster: 7 Tips That Actually Work (and What Doesn't)

Beard tips · Ippos Beard

There is no miracle product to grow a beard faster. What actually works: let it grow for four to six weeks without trimming, look after the skin underneath, brush every day, sleep well and eat well. The rest is mostly genetics and patience.

Beards take time. We want a full one in two weeks, we see a patchy one for a month, and we often end up shaving it all off. Yet most beards that seem to stop growing just need time and a few good habits. In this guide we sort out what really helps, what is a waste of money, and what can even slow growth down.

01Understand how a beard grows

A beard hair grows a little over a centimetre a month on average, roughly half an inch, and that speed is about the same for everyone. What differs from one man to the next is density (how many hairs per square centimetre), the thickness of each hair and how sensitive the follicles are to hormones. All of that is largely genetic. In other words, you cannot turn a thin beard into a lumberjack beard. What you can do is help every hair grow in good conditions, avoid breakage and make the beard look fuller than it is. That already goes a long way.

Something else worth knowing: every hair follows its own cycle. Some are growing, some are resting, some are falling out. That is why a three week beard looks uneven. The hairs did not all start at the same time, and the beard evens out as the weeks go by.

02Get through the first weeks without touching it

The first mistake is trimming too early. After ten days the beard has gaps, it itches, and you want to even it out. Resist. Trimming does not make it grow faster, that is a stubborn myth, and cutting at this stage removes exactly the length that will eventually cover the thin spots. Give yourself four to six weeks without cutting anything, except maybe the neckline to stay presentable at work.

The itching usually fades after the second week. It comes from dry skin and short hairs that prick. Moisturising the skin and washing the beard with lukewarm rather than hot water is often enough to calm it.

03Look after the skin under the beard

Hair grows better on healthy skin. Wash your face morning and evening with a gentle cleanser, not a soap that strips everything. Once or twice a week, a light scrub removes dead skin that can block hairs as they exit the follicle, which also limits ingrown hairs. Then moisturise. Dry skin gets irritated, flakes, and hairs break more easily.

A beard oil applied to slightly damp skin does both jobs: it feeds the skin and softens the hair. A few drops are enough, massaged down to the roots. If you are unsure which texture suits you, we wrote a guide on beard oil or beard balm depending on your beard type.

04Brush every day

Brushing is the most underrated habit of all. It spreads natural sebum along the whole hair, lifts dead skin, stimulates the skin through massage and trains the hairs in the same direction. A well brushed beard instantly looks denser. One minute morning and evening is enough, without forcing, always in the direction of growth. Our engraved beard brush (39.99 €) is engraved by hand in our workshop in France: you can have a first name, a date or a word that matters engraved on it. It is the kind of piece you keep for years, and it is part of our personalised beard accessories. If it is a present for a beard in the making, our article on the Christmas gift for a bearded man has more ideas.

05Sleep, food, exercise: the basics

Hair is made of keratin, a protein. It grows better when the body has what it needs. Nothing complicated: protein at every meal, vegetables, fruit, water. Sleep matters a lot, because the body repairs its tissues and produces a good part of its hormones at night. Exercise, especially strength training, helps keep testosterone at a healthy level, and testosterone plays a direct role in beard growth.

Chronic stress does the opposite: it can slow growth and encourage shedding. No special diet or expensive supplements needed. A reasonably balanced life already makes a real difference, and it is free.

06Derma roller, minoxidil, supplements: what you should know

Three topics come up all the time. First the beard derma roller: a small roller with micro needles that you run over the cheeks once or twice a week. The idea is to create tiny lesions that stimulate circulation and skin regeneration. Some users see a difference on thin areas after several months, others do not. If you try it, disinfect the roller every time, never use it on irritated skin and do not follow it with a scrub.

Then minoxidil: it is a medicine, originally meant for the scalp. It can grow hair on the face, but it has side effects and the results can disappear when you stop. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before you start. Finally supplements (biotin, zinc, B vitamins): useful only if you have a deficiency. Otherwise they will not grow more hair than your genetics allow.

07Trim smartly so the beard looks fuller

Once you are past the six week mark, good maintenance changes everything. Define a clean neckline just above the Adam's apple: it structures the face. Leave the cheeks longer where the beard is thin, and shorten the dense areas slightly to balance things out. Comb downwards before cutting, and always cut less than you planned. You can always take more off, never put it back.

One detail that helps you stick with this routine over time: the clean up afterwards. Many men give up on regular trimming because picking hairs out of the sink is a chore. A Beard Sponge (9.99 €) collects them in a single pass, and trimming becomes a two minute job you do without thinking.

How to choose

If you could keep only one accessory to help your beard grow in good conditions, make it a brush. Choose one with a handle that sits well in the hand and bristles that are neither too hard nor too soft, and use it every day in the direction of growth. It is the habit that makes a beard look denser from the very first weeks. And if the brush is meant for someone else, a hand engraving makes it one of a kind: a first name, a date, a nickname. That is what we do in our workshop in France.

Frequently asked questions

Does trimming your beard make it grow faster?

No. Growth happens at the root, inside the follicle, and cutting the tip changes nothing about its speed. Trimming is for shaping and removing split ends, not for speeding up growth. In the first weeks it is better not to touch it at all.

How long does it take to see a real beard?

Count on four to six weeks for the beard to take shape and for thin areas to start filling in. To really judge what your beard can do, wait three months without trimming it, apart from the neckline.

Does a derma roller really grow a beard?

Results vary a lot from one person to another. Some notice an improvement on thin areas after several months of regular use, others see no change. Always use it on clean skin and disinfect the roller every time.

Why does my beard only grow in patches?

That is the case for most men at the start. Follicles do not all have the same sensitivity to hormones and hairs do not all grow at the same time. With time, length often covers the gaps. A suitable trim, longer cheeks and shortened dense areas, also helps balance things out.
